Nonstop to two continents
Istanbul in four days: Domes, bazaars and ferries between continents
Every trip has a story. This one starts on a ferry between two continents.
Istanbul is a city divided by water and connected by it. On the European side, the old city holds Byzantine domes, Ottoman palaces and bazaars that have been trading for more than five centuries. Across the Bosphorus, Kadıköy and Moda show a more local Istanbul of produce markets, seaside walks and long meyhane dinners. Four days is enough to move between them the way residents do: by ferry, for the price of a transit fare.
At a glance

Where to stop in Istanbul
DAY 1
From Byzantine domes to bazaar lanes
Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque
📖 What to do: Climb to Hagia Sophia's upper gallery for the Byzantine mosaics, then cross the square to the Blue Mosque and its blue İznik-tiled interior.
📍 Why go: The two buildings face each other across Sultanahmet Square: a Byzantine church turned mosque, and the Ottoman mosque built to rival it. Seeing them back-to-back gives the old city its starting point.
🕐 When to visit: Arrive at opening and allow about two to three hours. Hagia Sophia's upper-gallery route costs €25 for foreign visitors; the Blue Mosque is free. Both close to visitors during prayer times. Dress modestly, remove shoes and, for women, cover your hair in the Blue Mosque.
Basilica Cistern
📖 What to do: Walk the raised paths between hundreds of lit marble columns, then find the two Medusa-head column bases at the far end.
📍 Why go: The cool, dim reservoir beneath Sultanahmet shows the engineering that kept the Byzantine capital supplied with water.
🕐 When to visit: Late morning. Allow 45 minutes and confirm current hours before going.
Süleymaniye Mosque
📖 What to do: Walk uphill to the mosque courtyard and its terrace overlooking the Golden Horn, then eat dinner on the street of small restaurants beside it.
📍 Why go: The terrace gives the clearest view of the waterways you will cross over the next three days.
🕐 When to visit: Go early afternoon and plan around prayer times.
Grand Bazaar
📖 What to do: Follow the covered lanes past carpet, ceramics, lamp and jewellery shops, then stop for tea in one of the inner courtyards.
📍 Why go: One of the world's oldest covered markets still works as a trading district, not just a souvenir stop.
🕐 When to visit: Mid-afternoon. Allow for two to three hours of exploring. The bazaar is closed on Sundays.
DAY 2
Follow the sultans down to the water
Topkapı Palace
📖 What to do: Move through the four courtyards, the Treasury and the Harem, finishing at the terraces above the Bosphorus.
📍 Why go: The palace ran the Ottoman Empire for nearly 400 years. Its kitchens, council chamber and private rooms show how that state worked day to day.
🕐 When to visit: Arrive at the 9:00 a.m. opening and see the Harem first. Allow about three hours. The palace is closed on Tuesdays.
Gülhane Park
📖 What to do: Walk downhill along the tree-lined paths, passing ornamental fountains and historic gardens before reaching the waterfront.
📍 Why go: The shaded paths give a museum-heavy morning room to breathe and lead naturally to Eminönü.
🕐 When to visit: Midday, straight after the palace.
Spice Bazaar and Eminönü waterfront
📖 What to do: Browse the spice, tea and Turkish delight stalls, then eat a fish sandwich or simit by the ferry piers.
📍 Why go: Eminönü is where the city's ferries, markets and street food meet, and lunch here comes with a view of the Golden Horn.
🕐 When to visit: Early afternoon. Expect crowds on weekends.
Galata Bridge and Karaköy
📖 What to do: Cross the bridge on foot past the fishermen, then choose dinner in the side streets of Karaköy.
📍 Why go: The short walk carries you from the old city into the newer district on the opposite bank without a transit transfer.
🕐 When to visit: Go near sunset, when the mosques on the skyline behind you light up.
DAY 3
Take the ferry to breakfast in Asia
Karaköy–Kadıköy ferry
📖 What to do: Tap your Istanbulkart, grab a glass of tea on board and cross the Bosphorus to the Asian side.
📍 Why go: The public ferry costs the same as a regular transit fare, so the commute doubles as a skyline cruise without booking a separate tour.
🕐 When to visit: Board in the morning and check the current timetable before heading to the pier.
Kadıköy Market
📖 What to do: Build breakfast from the cheese, olive, bakery and pickle shops, or sit down for a full Turkish breakfast spread.
📍 Why go: These working market streets show how residents shop and eat, a short walk from the pier.
🕐 When to visit: Go mid-morning, when the stalls are fully stocked.
Moda
📖 What to do: Walk south through Moda's cafés and independent shops to the seaside park and promenade.
📍 Why go: The neighbourhood offers a slower, residential side of Istanbul with open views back toward the old city.
🕐 When to visit: Spend the afternoon here and stay on the shoreline for sunset.
Kadıköy meyhane dinner and the evening ferry
📖 What to do: Share meze, grilled fish and rakı at a meyhane, then take the ferry back to the European side.
📍 Why go: The meyhane is a long, social meal, and the return crossing puts the lit-up mosques of the old city in front of you.
🕐 When to visit: Reserve dinner on weekends and confirm the last ferry time before you sit down.
DAY 4
Climb the tower, then follow the Golden Horn
Galata Tower
📖 What to do: Ride up to the viewing balcony and pick out the three days you have already covered.
📍 Why go: From above, the old city, the Bosphorus and the Asian shore finally connect into one picture.
🕐 When to visit: Go at opening to avoid the longest queue.
Istanbul Modern
📖 What to do: Walk downhill to Karaköy to see Turkish modern and contemporary art inside the waterfront museum.
📍 Why go: The collection adds a present-day perspective after three days of empires, and the windows frame the Bosphorus.
🕐 When to visit: Late morning. Confirm opening days and current exhibitions before going.
Balat and Fener
📖 What to do: Walk the steep streets of colourful row houses, antique shops and small cafés along the Golden Horn.
📍 Why go: These historic Greek, Jewish and Armenian neighbourhoods show a side of Istanbul that the monuments leave out.
🕐 When to visit: Spend the afternoon here. Wear shoes suited to cobblestones and hills.
Pierre Loti Hill
📖 What to do: Take the cable car up from Eyüp and order tea at the hilltop café.
📍 Why go: The view down the length of the Golden Horn closes the trip on the same water where the city began.
🕐 When to visit: Arrive before sunset and stay while the lights come on.
