Safety moment - baggage safety

“Baggage hygiene" is a set of standards for the proper handling of passengers’ bags when they are being placed on conveyor belts at check-in counters, Self-Serve Bag Drops (SSBDs), claim feeds and transfer induction points.

Why is good baggage hygiene important?

  1. To prevent damage - If a checked item is incorrectly positioned or inducted into the wrong area you risk damaging the baggage handling system, security screening equipment, and property belonging to our passengers.
  2. To be efficient - Proper baggage handling will reduce the number of mis-tracked bags which can slow down the time bags spend in our system or require manual processes.
  3. To mitigate operational impact - Improper induction and careless handling of baggage can result in bag jams, which slow down and degrade the system.
