“Baggage hygiene" is a set of standards for the proper handling of passengers’ bags when they are being placed on conveyor belts at check-in counters, Self-Serve Bag Drops (SSBDs), claim feeds and transfer induction points.
Why is good baggage hygiene important?
- To prevent damage - If a checked item is incorrectly positioned or inducted into the wrong area you risk damaging the baggage handling system, security screening equipment, and property belonging to our passengers.
- To be efficient - Proper baggage handling will reduce the number of mis-tracked bags which can slow down the time bags spend in our system or require manual processes.
- To mitigate operational impact - Improper induction and careless handling of baggage can result in bag jams, which slow down and degrade the system.
