Airside Safety Week – Day 5

On Day 5 of Airside Safety Week, we will discuss the importance of reducing Foreign Object Debris (FOD).

On-site activities

Our in-person programming features fun, interactive ways to learn and test our skills. Today’s on-site activities include:

  • ASO Ride Along*
  • Wildlife Control Officer Site Visit*
  • FOD Walk*

*Prior registration required

Check out our on-site activities page to learn more about how you can participate. Make sure to register before the deadline!

Online learning

Today we are highlighting Foreign Object Debris (FOD), including a review of:

  • What is FOD?
  • FOD damage

Once you have reviewed the day’s learning material, test your knowledge of FOD by taking today’s quiz (links to quizzes will be accessible September 16 to 20).

Participants in today's quiz will be automatically entered into a prize draw.

What is FOD?

FOD refers to any loose object that can potentially damage aircraft or result in an injury. It can include things like:

  • Pavement fragments
  • Catering supplies
  • Building materials
  • Loose hardware
  • Pieces of luggage
  • Wildlife

FOD can be found anywhere airside, including terminal and cargo aprons, taxiways and runways.

FOD Damage

  • When exposed to jet blast from aircraft engines, these items can be blown around forcefully and cause injury to a person or equipment.
  • Runway FOD has the most significant potential to cause damage.
  • Taxiway and apron FOD may seem less harmful, but they can still cause significant damage to the aircraft or transition onto the runway if not removed.

We can keep FOD out of the airside by conducting ongoing inspections of work areas and promptly removing any FOD as it is discovered.

To learn more about FOD safety and how you can help keep our airfield clean and free from damaging objects, review the Toronto Pearson FOD Prevention & Control Policy.

Thank you for participating in these five days of activities and learning for Airside Safety Week and for continuing to help us to remember the importance of Safety Always at Pearson.
