It is the responsibility of those using Toronto Pearson to know the Cannabis Act’s implications in relation to travel to, from or through the airport.
International travel
The legalization of cannabis in Canada does not change Canada’s border rules. It is your responsibility to know the Cannabis Act’s implications in relation to travel to, from or through Toronto Pearson.
- taking cannabis, or products containing cannabis, including edibles, into Canada remains illegal and can result in serious criminal penalties both at home and abroad
- taking cannabis or any product containing cannabis across Canada’s international borders remains illegal and can result in serious criminal penalties both at home and abroad
- although the possession of cannabis or products containing cannabis is legal in some U.S. states, it remains illegal under U.S. federal laws in any form and quantity, making it illegal to bring across the Canada-U.S. border
Domestic travel
Each province and territory will have its own rules about the production, distribution, sale and possession of cannabis and cannabis-containing products, including possession limits, legal age, and where cannabis may be used. You are responsible for knowing what will be legal in the province or territory you live in or are visiting.
At the airport
It is important you understand the Cannabis Act’s implications for air travel, and as such we are focusing on helping to educate travellers and the general public. This includes:
- installing Transport Canada-mandated signage throughout the terminals, as well as additional signage where applicable
- updating our website with information and links where you can find more information on the Cannabis Act
- using social media to give you the information you need before you travel
Consistent with a number of other major airports across the country, Toronto Pearson has made the decision to prohibit cannabis smoking or vaping anywhere on airport grounds. We will continue to monitor the implementation of cannabis legislation across Canada and evolve our policies as necessary.
