Accessibility first: Recognizing World Braille Day at Toronto Pearson

On January 4, join us in recognizing World Braille Day and the importance of braille in empowering people who are blind or partially sighted across the globe through inclusion, access to education and equitable job opportunities. We want to provide inclusive access to the joys of air travel through a safe and welcoming airport experience for everyone, which is why we are on a journey to make Toronto Pearson the most accessible airport in the world.

Invented by Louis Braille, this remarkable communication system uses six dots to represent each letter, number, and even math, science and music symbols. Braille has transformed the lives of people around the globe through access to education, the joy of reading, social inclusion and more equitable job opportunities.

Five ways we are making YYZ more accessible for those who are blind or partially sighted:

  1. Accessible website: our passengers’ journey starts before you arrive at the airport, which is why our website meets or exceeds the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0 Level AA standard.
  2. Accessible check-in kiosks: Available throughout the departures level of Terminals 1 and 3, these kiosks include and tactilely discernible keys.
  3. Aira: This app enables independent navigation of the airport with on-demand, personalized access to visual information. (Available for IOS and Android systems.)
  4. Blind Square: A self-voicing IOS app that uses GPS to provide verbal information on a passenger’s location and surroundings for improved navigation.
  5. Service Dog and Pet Relief Areas: These areas provide comfortable spaces for travelling service and assistance animals.
