Pearson Honours Workers at National Day of Mourning Ceremony

Let’s recommit to our goal of zero injuries.

National Day of Mourning is observed across the country on April 28 as a way to remember those who have lost their lives or experienced illness or injury while on the job. This annual ceremony provides an opportunity to reflect, remember and recommit ourselves to our shared goal of zero injuries.

In honour of this occasion, workers, leaders and partners from across the airport come together each year for a ceremony and reception. All members of the Pearson community are encouraged to join in this observance.

When:

Tuesday, April 28, 10:45 a.m.

Where:

Terminal 1 Departures Lounge 15

The ceremony will feature remarks from safety leaders across the Pearson community, along with our union and organizational partners. Speakers will include:

  • Carla Greco, Director, Airport Security, GTAA
  • Paul Loyen, Vice President, Airport Operations, Air Canada
  • Erin Pitruzzella, Threads of Life
  • Sonya Barbezat, Health and Safety Committee Employee Representative, CUPE Local 4092
  • La Koya Brown, Health and Safety Co-Chair, IAM Union
  • Hager Ibrahim, Director, Aviation Safety Regulation & Performance, GTAA

The ceremony will also feature performances by Unifor Health and Safety representative Yavar Khan Qadri and Air Canada Customer Service/Ramp Agent, Matt Ulett.

In addition to the ceremony, Pearson will commemorate National Day of Mourning with an airport‑wide moment of silence at 11 a.m. and by lowering flags to half‑mast. In the evening, the GTAA Apron Tower will be illuminated with special yellow lighting in recognition of the day.
