2020 capital maintenance

April 20, 2020 is the start of work on our maintenance projects for the year. The biggest projects are the resurfacing of Runway 15L/33R and surface repairs to taxiways alongside Runway 05/23. Other smaller projects will take place as well, with the last project expected to be completed in September 2020. During the period of work, runway selection criteria do not change, and as always are heavily influenced by weather, as well as runway availability.

This year’s projects

There are two important areas of work for this year:

  • Rebuilding three sections of Taxiway H
  • Rehabilitation of Runway 15L/33R

The following information includes predicted operational contingencies for each maintenance project based on available information. Please note that airport operations are dynamic and can be affected by many conditions such as weather, safety, and traffic levels.

For more information, keep reading or take a look at the latest community presentation for information about the work, including maps and diagrams of the work areas.

Project One – Rebuilding Taxiway H

This project will focus on the replacement of concrete slabs on Taxiway H, affecting the availability of Runway 05/23. Work will be completed in three phases.

Phase 1 – Late April to late June
Regular hours and overnight

Runway 05/23 will be temporarily shortened during this time. This could result in an increased use of Runway 15L and 33R for one-off departures of large aircraft that need extra runway length.

Residents living in areas directly north and south of the airport are most likely to notice a change:

  • North – Brampton East, Brampton Centre, Brampton North, Mississauga-Malton
  • South – Etobicoke Centre, Etobicoke-Lakeshore, Mississauga East-Cooksville

Phase 2 – Early to mid-June (14 nights)
10:30 pm to 6:30 am

From 10:30 pm to 12:00 am Runway 05/23 is closed, north-south operations are likely.

Between 12:00 am to 6:30 am, Runway 05/23 will be closed nightly. This will result in increased usage of maintenance contingency preferential runways, including 06L, 24R, and 15L.

Residents living in areas directly north and south of the airport aligned with these runways are most likely to notice a change:

  • North – Brampton East, Brampton Centre, Brampton North, Mississauga-Malton
  • South – Etobicoke Centre, Etobicoke-Lakeshore, Mississauga East-Cooksville

Phase 3 – September (14 days)
Regular hours and overnight

This will be the final phase of work on Taxiway H. As of March 2020, planning is not complete for this section of work.

  • North – Brampton East, Brampton Centre, Brampton North, Mississauga-Malton
  • South – Etobicoke Centre, Etobicoke-Lakeshore, Mississauga East-Cooksville

Project Two: Rehabilitation of Runway 15L/33R

This is a full-length resurfacing of the runway to maintain a safe and stable paved surface. This runway will not be available for use. If required due to weather, it can be recalled with 48-hour notice.

Phase 1 and 2– Late June to late July
Regular hours and overnight

During the daytime work, there are two possible scenarios for North/South runway operations as Phase 1 of 15L/33R rehabilitation is completed.

  1. Weather that requires North/South operation is predicted 48 hours or more in advance.
In this case, the work would be suspended for the duration of the weather event. Runway 15L and 33R would be made available allowing for a typical North/South Runway operation, using both 15L/33R and 15R/33L.
  2. Weather that requires North/South operation is predicted less than 48 hours in advance.
In this case, Runway 15L/33R could not be recalled back into operation in time. Only Runways 15R or 33L would be used for North/South operation. The difference from regular operations is that 15R and 33L are usually used in combination with 15L and 33R.

Residents living in areas directly north and south of the airport aligned with Runways 15R and 33L are most likely to notice a change:

  • North – Brampton East, Brampton Centre, Brampton North, Mississauga-Malton
  • South – Etobicoke Centre, Etobicoke-Lakeshore, Mississauga East-Cooksville

During the nighttime work on Phase 1 of 15L/33R rehabilitation, increased usage of the maintenance contingency preferential Runways is expected from 12:00 am to 6:30 am.

The anticipated nighttime Runway configurations are:

  • Arrivals and departures on Runway 05 or 23
  • If required by winds, arrivals and departures on 15R or 33L

Residents living in areas directly east and west of the airport aligned with Runways 05 and 23 are most likely to notice a change:

  • East – Etobicoke North, Humber River-Black Creek, Vaughan-Woodbridge, Willowdale, Thornhill, Richmond Hill, Markham-Unionville
  • West – Mississauga-Malton, Mississauga-Erin Mills, Mississauga-Streetsville, Milton, Brampton South

Residents living in areas directly north and south of the airport aligned with Runways 15R and 33L that are most likely to notice a change:

  • North – Brampton East, Brampton Centre, Brampton North, Mississauga-Malton
  • South – Etobicoke Centre, Etobicoke-Lakeshore, Mississauga East-Cooksville

Phase 3 – August (Work TBC)
Midnight to 6:30 am

Mill and pave work at the intersection of Runway 05/23 and Runway 15L/33R. This phase of the project is still not confirmed for completion.
