WhyYZ - How is the airport travel process different?

The WhyYZ series is a helpful guide that answers questions about your experience at our Healthy Airport. We feature experts from across the Toronto Pearson community, answering frequently asked questions so that when you’re ready to travel, you can feel confident that we’ll help you do it safely.

Today, we’re talking with Greg, Associate Director, Government Agency Programs.

Hi Greg. I’m going to be arriving at Pearson on an international flight. What do I need to know?

With more people travelling and additional COVID-19 screening requirements in place at Canada Border Services Agency, your time to complete the process could be three hours or more, depending on your unique set of circumstances. If your flight arrives during peak hours, you may be asked to disembark the aircraft and proceed to an area of the terminal building to wait until space becomes available in the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) Customs Hall. In some cases, you may be asked to wait for a period of time on the aircraft in order to maintain a safe and efficient passenger flow through the terminals. When going through customs, you will be required to answer additional health questions. Passengers arriving from international destinations must submit all required information in ArriveCAN (app or website) prior to arrival in Canada. This includes travel, contact and quarantine information. Fully vaccinated travellers must also provide proof of vaccination in English or French.

I’m fully vaccinated with a Health Canada approved shot, but my friend only has their first dose. Are the requirements different for us based on vaccination status?

Yes, you and your friend will have different requirements because you are fully vaccinated, but your friend is not.

Fully vaccinated travellers entering Canada with a Health Canada-approved vaccine do not need to quarantine. Fully vaccinated travellers are also not required to complete a mandatory COVID-19 arrivals test; however, you could be asked to complete a test as part of a small random sampling of passengers. As a fully vaccinated traveller, you will still need to complete a COVID-19 test on Day 8.

Unvaccinated or partially vaccinated travellers, like your friend, will be tested for COVID-19 on arrival and on Day 8, and will need to complete a 14-day quarantine. The 14-day quarantine can be completed at your final destination because Government Approved Accommodations (also known as quarantine hotels) are no longer in effect in Canada.
