We’re teaming up with GLOBE Series to help tackle climate change

As a member of GLOBE Series, we’re taking part in the Canadian Champions vs. Climate Change initiative, an exciting contest using sport to help raise awareness about the environment.

Climate change is threatening outdoor sports, such as pond hockey, which is why GLOBE Series and Olympic Gold Medallist Hayley Wickenheiser have come together to inspire people to take action. By entering the contest, you’ll have a chance to win a mentoring session with Olympic Gold Medallist Hayley Wickenheiser.

This initiative challenges participants to take steps to reduce their carbon footprints, such as biking instead of driving or increasing the size of laundry loads.

We’re supporting this initiative as we’re committed to environmental sustainability. To help combat climate change, our initiatives have focused on reducing greenhouse gas (GhG) emissions through energy reduction and adapting the airport to the changing climate.

We’ve seen much success and at the end of 2020, the GTAA had reduced almost 60% of our emissions against a 2006 baseline.

As we look towards the future, we’ve identified seven environmental action plans to focus on, with three of them targeting areas that contribute to climate change:

  • The Climate Change Resiliency Plan will include actions for assessing risks related to changing weather patterns due to climate change. Initiatives include building codes being revised over the coming years, renewable energy plans and further climate change resilience programs will be fully integrated into operations and development processes by 2025.
  • The Carbon Neutrality and Emissions Action Plan will set near term targets and initiatives to put the airport on track for net zero by 2050. Initiatives will include working to further reduce emissions and the future electrification of the Ground Service Equipment, light fleet and bussing operations.
  • The Strategic Energy Master Plan will implement a net zero energy strategy requirement into net new build and set renewable energy targets to support the net zero GhG goal.

We encourage you to become a Climate Champion today!

Contest closes at midnight, Pacific time, March 11, 2021.
