"My name is Carolanne and I am an Area Sales and Event Manager with the Courtyard by Marriott Hotel at Toronto Pearson, managed by Atlific Hotels. I’m a Ryerson University graduate, having earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree in the Hospitality and Tourism Management Business program. I had worked at the Westin Prince Hotel for two and a half years but wanted to work closer to home since I live in the west end of the Greater Toronto Area.
"In 2001, a new Courtyard by Marriott Toronto Airport Hotel was being built and the company was hiring all positions. I was offered a position as Guest Services Supervisor which I happily accepted, and eventually moved on to be a part of the sales team in 2009 as the Catering Coordinator. As Atlific Hotels added hotels to their portfolio in the area around the airport, my role also expanded, and I now hold a position as Area Sales and Event Manager.
"What brings me the most joy is connecting with guests, clients and my co-workers. I think the pandemic made this even more evident when we became isolated from seeing each other. I have met so many interesting people over the years from various backgrounds all over the world. I’ve met business owners, pilots, doctors, Olympic athletes, authors, scientists, police officers, judges, co-op students and so many others. My co-workers are amazing; they really feel like family. Our staff truly represent the core values of Atlific which are Integrity, Respect, Loyalty and Family.
"The most challenging aspects of my job overall have been external adversities. I worked through 9/11, lasting power outages, the SARS outbreak, a flood, and now the COVID-19 pandemic. When brought back to work after a year of furlough, I was asked to work at the front desk again. We were a GAA (Government Approved Accommodation) hotel, which meant we had travellers arriving internationally staying with us for three nights or until they received a negative PCR test. We brought the guests their meals, made sure government mandates were being followed and all areas of the hotel and guestrooms were clean on a frequent basis, all while doing our best to help people feel comfortable during their stay. It has brought us closer together, humbled us and emphasized the value of having each other in our lives.
"As an event manager, it’s all about details. I strive every day to make sure all the details of an event are in order and that nothing has been missed. It is important to me to approach others with humility and kindness in all situations. I like to encourage a positive work environment and I find that our team does the same, which makes for a great place to work."
