"My name is Dan and I serve as General Chairperson with the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAMAW) trade union. I also serve on the Toronto Pearson Worker Health & Safety Forum. Prior to this, I spent 20 years loading aircraft on the ramp for Air Canada—something I miss doing.
Ensuring safety is my favourite aspect of my job because I’m always working on helping to protect people and making the workplace better for all. It’s not one person that helps with this, either; it’s always a collective effort when it comes to safety.
National Day of Mourning is a difficult day for some. In an instant, someone’s life can change at a workplace. April 28 is a day to mourn our losses, but it’s also about fighting for those who are living—those who are in the workplace today.
The fact that the airport has established a safety culture and structure that could be used as a model for other airports around the world makes me proud.
If there is one thing people should know about airport safety, it is that we care. We care about our co-workers and build strong relationships with one another. For that reason, we look out for each other. What we have at Pearson is an entire community, and I, along with so many others, am proud to be a part of it."
