“I am a veteran and member of the Royal Canadian Legion and I have been handing out poppies at the airport for about 40 years. I served as President of the Malton Branch, first located on Derry Road and later Brandon Gate Drive, so the airport was quite close for me to hand out poppies.
We would take 10-12 members over to each terminal for 5 or 6 hours. They would then be relieved by a new shift of volunteers. It has been a golden location with so many people passing throgh. Because of our success there, we wouldn’t need to go to many other locations in our area. Over the years we were even able to get poppy livery on multiple planes and they looked really sharp.
I love planes and I used to go watch them on the observation deck of old Terminal 1. I was a big fan of the Avro Arrow and one of my favourite memories was being invited to a meeting at the airport by former Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion. There, she presented me with a replica of a plane.
Honouring our veterans is very important to me and it is a big reason why I still deliver poppies to the airport.”
