Black History Month 2021

As we come to the close of the 25th observance of Black History Month in Canada, the GTAA community is extremely grateful to the organizers of this year’s activities and to the participants that shared their stories and experience.

We heard from CFL legend Michael "Pinball" Clemons, an individual who exemplifies the qualities of personal excellence, teamwork and community leadership. Our own staff participated in a panel for youth in the Weston/Mt Dennis community, hosted by the Frontlines community organization. Our employees were also treated to a virtual performance by the Bentley Collective, a trio of accomplished musicians whose songs are historically based on Black achievement in Canada.

Yesterday, we closed out the month with a presentation from author Camille Dundas, on the history of racism in Canada, as well as the announcement of our 2020 Nest Fund recipients. Seven Black- and Indigenous-led organizations will receive a total of $300,000 in funding to support capacity building projects, ranging from improving organizational technology and strategic planning support to training for staff or expanding reach to take a program to the next level.
