Over one million dollars raised since 2007

September 22, 2018

TORONTO – More than 2,500 community members—participants, volunteers, sponsors and partners—gathered this morning on one of Canada’s busiest runways for Toronto Pearson’s annual Runway Run, a fun, one-of-a-kind 5K run and 2K walk raising funds for Propeller Project, Toronto Pearson’s signature community investment program. Now in its 11th year, the event raised $100,000 for local non-profit organizations working to provide employment support in neighbourhoods around the airport.

“Toronto Pearson is more than just your airport, we’re your neighbour,” said Robyn Connelly, Director, Community Relations at the Greater Toronto Airports Authority. “Eleven years and running, we’ve opened up our runway to provide experienced race-goers and families alike with the unique opportunity to run alongside aircraft and get behind the scenes at Canada’s largest airport. We are grateful to our sponsors, including our title sponsors Coca-Cola and Air Canada, our volunteers and participants who have joined together to make the 2018 event a success for the continued benefit of the community.”

Taking place on Runway 06R-24L, thousands took part in the event for the chance to run or walk alongside aircraft and experience incredible views from the unique vantage point of the runway, which measures 9000 feet by 200 feet and was sectioned off in a 5K loop for the event. Throughout the morning, participants experienced the people, equipment and animals that contribute to the safe operation of the airport.

Approximately 30,000 people have participated in the Runway Run since its inception in 2007, helping to raise more than one million dollars for Propeller Project partner organizations, including ACCES Employment and MABELLEarts, focused on helping area residents gain the skills, connections and opportunities they need to be meaningfully employed. In 2017 alone, 67,000 people received programming through projects funded by the Propeller Project.
